Thursday October 20th:
21-7 last week ouch. Menominee screws me once again, I needed some teams to step it up for a week since I put my faith in them but it didnt happen (Gogebic, Ewen) and some teams just were a complete letdown (Esky, Gwinn, Snowbirds)..Well lets see if I can guess this final week any worse.

WEEK 9 This the last week of the regular season for Michigan Schools (already). A number of schools have already qualified or the playoffs while several others can make it in with wins this week. Last week was the worst week of the season for picking games. Results of week 8 and year-to-date follow:

Week 8: Results

8-man: 9 C, 0 W = 100.0%
Y-T-D.: 64 C, 5 W = 92.75%

11-man: 11 C, 8 W = 57.89%
Y-T-D.: 129 C, 28 W = 82.17%

Totals: 20 C, 8 W = 71.43%
Y-T-D.: 197 C, 33 W = 85.65%

Week 8: UP 3, LP 1
Y-T-D.: UP 35, LP 9

Week 8: MI 1, WI 2
Y-T-D.: MI 20, WI 12

Thursday Oct. 20th:

8-man:

Forest Park (7-1) vs Cedarville (6-2) (at Engadine)

This is the first ever meeting on the football field between the two U.P. "Trojans" schools. Cedarville comes in losing their last 2 games and in serious trouble of not making the 8-man playoffs if it loses this week. Cedarville has to hope that 3 of the 6 schools behind it in the playoff point standings also lose this weekend, which would assure Cedarville of making the playoffs. In this game, Forest Park will continue to show it's might on the field as they run past the Green and White Trojans. F.P. Trojans 48, Cedarville Trojans 14.

11-man:

Ishpeming (3-4) at Gwinn (5-3)

Both teams here are fighting to get into the playoffs. It looks like even with a loss that Gwinn should make it in with a 5-4 record. That is if some of the games statewide go as planned. The chances of the Hematites making in with a 4-4 record are extremely long, but nothing is out of the question. Gwinn is also fighting for 4th place in the conference. They get the better of the Blue and White here. Modeltowners 22, Hematites 20.

Westwood (2-6) at Negaunee (8-0)

Westwood had to hang on last week to get it's 2nd win of the year, beating Manistique 24-21. Now they hope to play spoiler here this week. But they can only spoil the Miner's perfect season. Negaunee has already wrapped up a share of the Mid-Pen crown and now are looking to stay unbeaten in order to host some playoff games. Negaunee gets to stay unbeaten on it's way to win no. 9 here. Miners 38, Patriots 12.

Friday Oct. 21st:

8-man:

Onaway (4-4) at Bellaire (3-5)

The young Eagles finish the season with this being the only one in 8-man that will be a losing year. Playing all the young players this year will only make them better in the next few years. Onaway had hopes of getting into the playoffs, but the top teams in the B.A. have been just too tough. Still, the Cardinals can finish with another winning year by winning this game. The visitors get to win no. 5 here. Cardinals 36, Eagles 6.

Pellston (0-8) at Charlton Heston Academy (1-7)

Perhaps in the off season the Hornets need to go back to trying some fundamentals in football. Whatever they are doing at Pellston sure is not working. The Patriots might be young but they are still trying to improve. As their school grows, so will their success on the football field. They get their 2nd win on the year, this one actually on the field. Patriots 28, Hornets 14.

Posen (4-4) at Engadine (8-0)

The Eagles have had a fantastic season. Just one more game will secure their best season yet in 8-man and also a conference championship to themselves. Plus, a win here will secure at least 1 home footall game in the playoffs. Posen will not make the playoffs and can only hope to pull off a huge upset this week. Don't look for the visitors to come close in this game here. Eagles 56, Vikings 12.

Rudyard (5-3) at Pickford (7-1)

The Bulldogs have had a successful debut season in 8-man, but cannot go to the playoffs since they are slightly too big to qualify. Therefore, this week's game is their playoff. IF they can knock off their chief rival it will make their season. Pickford is rolling right now. The Panthers are flying under the radar. NO team wants to meet them in the playoffs (except for maybe North Central or Forest Park). The Panthers get win no. 8 here and will host a first round playoff game. Panthers 46, Bulldogs 20.

Carney-Nadeau (1-6) at Ontonagon (3-5)

Both of these teams began the season with wins in week 1. But after that things did not go all that well. But, at least for the Wolves, they have been able to finish their first season in 8-man football without having to forfeit any games. Ontonagon has some decent athletes on the field. The Gladiators are suffering from some injuries at this point which has hurt their chances in other games. Even without those players the hosts should have no problem getting win no. 4 this week. Gladiators 38, Wolves 6.

North Central (8-0) at Stephenson (7-1)

It's possible that these 2 teams could meet 2 weeks in a row (meaning they play in the playoffs next week) just like last year. The Eagles have looked very impressive all year long and they have the team speed to keep up with the Jets. They just don't have a QB as good as North Central. The Jets get win no. 9 on the year with another big win here. Jets 62, Eagles 24

Rapid River (5-3) at Ewen-Trout Creek (1-7)

The Rocket players, coaches and fans will sure be scoreboard watching after their game this week. After securing win no. 6 on the road here, they will need to hope for some help downstate in order for them to make the playoffs. At least 3 schools ahead of them in the playoff point averages will need to lose in order for Rapid River to make the playoffs. The chances of 3 teams losing is better than 50/50 as of now, so there is hope in Rapid River. The Rockets win this game easily. Rockets 40, Panthers 6.

Superior Central (3-5) at Baraga (1-7)

The Cougars put a splashy 84 points on the board last week in it's win over Ewen-Trout Creek. There is no reason to believe that they won't be able to score a ton of points this week too against Baraga. The Vikings have had no luck this season, injury wise. But at least they were able to finish the season on the field. The Cougars get their 3rd straight win here, and no. 4 on the season, which is their most since the 2012 season. Cougars 42, Vikings 20.

11-man:

Kingsford (6-2) at Escanaba (6-2)

Both teams here are already in the playoffs. Now they are fighting to win this game in order to host a playoff game next week. They will be in different divisions in the playoffs. Also the winner here will finish 2nd in the GNC this year. The Flivvers looked very good last week in it's win over Gladstone last week, while the Eskymos had issues with their offense in their loss to Merrill (WI). This week the visitors get the win. Flivvers 28, Eskymos 24.

Calumet (7-1) at Gladstone (3-5)

Now that the Braves have finished playing their GNC teams (they head to the Mid-Pen next year), they can concentrate on next year. But first they must take on a red hot Calumet squad. The Copper Kings are getting noticed statewide this year and for good reason. Their only loss was by a TD to unbeaten Negaunee. A win here will secure a home playoff game for Calumet. That is a great incentive right there. Copper Kings 28, Braves 14.

Marquette (1-7) at Menominee (7-1)

The Maroons had to ride back home from DeWitt licking their wounds from a big loss. But at least the Menominee faithful can be assured that they won't have to face DeWitt in the playoffs. Marquette is actually a bigger school than DeWitt, but no where near the talent level. Menominee needs to win here to assure it of a home playoff game. Poor Marquette heads to Menominee at a bad time: playing Menominee after a Maroon loss. Menominee wins big here. Maroons 42, Redmen 7.

Sault Ste. Marie (2-6) at Kingsley (2-6)

The Blue Devils were the lucky recipients of Kingsley's original week 9 opponent (Benzie Central) cancelling it's season. The Stags wanted a real game and have agreed to play the Blue Devils. Both teams come in at 2-6, but that is the only thing that is similar here. Sault Ste. Marie played the much tougher schedule on the year. They make the long trip to Kingsley, but the Blue Devils head back home a winner. Blue Devils 26, Stags 20.

Iron Mountain (6-2) at Norway (7-1)

This is another battle of rival teams that have already qualified for the playoffs. This game is for 2nd place in the GNC this year, something that no one would have thought possible for Norway this year. The Knights looked very good against a good Gwinn squad last week. Iron Mountain was holding it's own against Bark River-Harris. The Mountaineers need this game in order to have any chance at hosting a playoff game. They hold off their neighborhood rivals to get the win. Mountaineers 34, Knights 21.

Hancock (4-4) at Houghton (3-5)

The Bulldogs have a chance at a winning season, yet virtually no shot at the playoffs even if they win this week. Still, it's been a nice turnaround season for Hancock. The winner of the Copper Bowl quite often is the team that was not playing it's best heading into it. If that is the case, then Houghton should win this game. But, hold the fort. Hancock has that slight playoff incentive to play for. Look for the Bulldogs to get the win here. Bulldogs 34, Gremlins 28.

West Iron County (5-3) at L'Anse (2-6)

One could actually call this a playoff game for the Wykons. A win and they are in. A loss and they could be out. The 3 losses West Iron has suffered are all to playoff teams this year. L'Anse is playing spoiler this week, though the Purple Hornets have actually played fairly tough the last 3 or 4 games. Still, they don't have the hope of getting into the playoffs looming for them like the Wykons do. Look for West Iron to get the win here. Wykons 29, Purple Hornets 7.

Newberry (7-1) at St. Ignace (7-1)

Both of these teams are already in the playoffs. And both want to win this week to ensure getting a home game in the playoffs. While these 2 are not conference rivals anymore, they are rivals in every other sense. After the Indians lost to Lake Linden-Hubbell, many folks have overlooked them on the season. But they are still a dangerous team. The Saints are still highly ranked statewide. Coming off a huge win at Ishpeming last week, St. Ignace is looking very tough heading into the playoffs. The Saints hold fort at home this week. Saints 38, Indians 20.

Bark River-Harris (3-5) at North Dickinson (5-3)

A tough schedule was just too much this season for the Broncos. Now that they are out of the playoff picture, they turn their attention to spoiling a playoff season for North Dickinson. That may be too late as it looks like the Nordics will be in win or lose this game. The Nordics had several chances to score in it's game at Lake Linden-Hubbell last week but could just not cash in. This week they find a way to score just enough to pull out an exciting win. Nordics 26, Broncos 22.

Mancelona (2-6) at Central Lake (2-6)

Both teams have defeated Mesick this year. That is no big accomplishment. Their other wins are over winless teams. Therefore this goes down as your basic toss up game this week. Will have to go with the team that lost by less points to it's opponents than the other team. Mancelona should win here then. Ironmen 28, Trojans 21.

Gaylord St. Mary (6-2) at East Jordan (4-4)

The Red Devils won't be making the playoffs now so their only plan this week is to be spoiler to the Snowbirds. St. Mary stumbled last week in it's loss to Harbor Springs. That loss prevented St. Mary from clinching 2nd place alone in the NMFL Legacy. The Snowbirds can head into the playoffs on a good note if they can get the win this week. This should be another close game but the visitors get the win. Snowbirds 34, Red Devils 22.

Johannesburg-Lewiston (4-4) at Harbor Springs (4-4)

It's hard to believe but the winner of this game actually a decent shot at getting into the playoffs at 5-4. The Rams have turned their season around after an 0-3 start. A win here and the Rams finish 2nd in the conference by themselves. Both teams have lost to 3 confirmed playoff teams heading into week 9. Go with the hotter team in this game as Harbor Springs gets the win. Rams 34, Cardinals 26.

Inland Lakes (0-8) at Hillman (4-4)

The Tigers are one of those schools that are hoping to get into the playoffs at 5-4. Since the Tigers are in Class D, the odds of them getting in look fairly good. But first things first here for Hillman. They must beat a team that is winless. The Tigers cannot over look Inland Lakes because of it's record. The incentive of making the playoffs takes over for Hillman here and they get the win at home. Tigers 39, Bulldogs 12.

Saturday Oct. 22nd:

11-man:

Mendon (6-2) at Manistique (0-8)

The Hornets make their very first trip to the U.P. to play a high school football game. While the drive up will be scenic, the team they will face will not be. The Emeralds are 1 of only 2 teams in the U.P. (Ironwood is the other) that are winless after 8 weeks. The Hornets are a statewide power on the football field, and have won numerous state titles. This is not one of their better teams, but the Hornets have more than enough here to get the easy win. Hornets 46, Emeralds 6.

Ironwood (0-8) at Gogebic (1-7)

This game will finish what has been a disappointing season for both teams. The Miners had hoped to return to the playoffs this year. The Red Devils were hoping to win at least 1 game this year. They are currently riding a 24 game losing streak, which is one of the longest current streaks in the state. Will this be the last game for Gogebic as a co-op program? There are rumblings that Wakefield-Marenisco wants out of the co-op so they can play 8-man. We shall see if that happens. For this game, the Miners get the win (on Wakefield-Marenisco's home field). Miners 34, Red Devils 14.

Munising (2-6) at Lake Linden-Hubbell (8-0)

The Lakes could finish another regular season unbeaten with a win here. Not many thought that was possible after the Lakes lost a lot of talent from last year's club. But, here we are. Munising also lost a great deal of talent from last year and just could not recover from that. The long bus ride to the Copper Country will be another disappointing ride for the Mustang faithful. The Lakes stay unbeaten and get to host a playoff game next week. Lakes 38, Mustangs 6.

Last predictions of the season. I do not do playoff predictions anymore. Just don't like to do them. Especially with UP teams playing each other. The playoffs are the time of the year where we all back each other. It's what separates us from Trolls.
17-9 (65.4%) last week. Been a good year up until that. Ouch. Had trouble with the WestPAC and the NMFL Legacy league. Some of the schools in those conferences are wildly inconsistent. Went with a couple bold predictions. I failed on those. Overall season still really good at 196-33 (85.6%).

Good luck in the playoffs UP teams!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20th

Ishpeming (3-4) at Gwinn (5-3) - Mid Peninsula Conference
Ishpeming's 2016 season is on life support. The Hematites just haven't been able to get on track this season. 4 key injuries have them on the outside looking in for the playoffs at the moment. Can they get in with a win here? Long shot, but even slim hope is hope. The Hematite's 8 game season is biting them in the butt this year. Not many playoff points to be had beating the likes of Manistique and Westwood. Oconto gave them some. Gwinn could give them some more. Enough to get in? Well.... there will be a lot of at large teams this year. You never know. Gwinn couldn't close the deal to earn a playoff birth last week. The game was close but the Modeltowners faltered late and fell by a score that was indicative on how close that game was. I have been giving Ishpeming the benefit of the doubt all season. I'm officially giving up.
Gwinn 14 Ishpeming 12

Westwood (2-6) at Negaunee (8-0) - Mid Peninsula Conference
The Miners showed up to play on Marquette's new turf last week. The Miners dominated their rivals and look to lock up that unbeaten season this week by beating another neighbor who is rebuilding. Westwood will be much improved next year. Can't wait to see how much. The Miners are clearly headed to the D6 playoffs. They will have Calumet in their district for sure. Menominee is the other possibility with the Maroons squarely on the border between D5 and D6. It depends on what teams win this week to determine that. If the Maroons make it, the Miners will get the second seed in the District. If the Maroons go up to D5, I think it opens the door for this Miner team be the favorite in D6. Especially if Ithaca moves up with the Maroons. Stay tuned! All Miners here.
Negaunee 36 Westwood 6

Forest Park (7-1) vs Cedarville (6-2) at Engadine - Non Conference
Another interesting game here. Cedarville has run into two good teams the past two weeks. Bring on number three. Forest Park is arguably the second best 8 man team in the State depending on who's opinion you are listening to. Forest Park is likely to have the second seed in this District... unless Engadine gets bumped over. Then they would fall to the 3 seed and get to come back here next week. It can go so many ways right now. The MHSAA originally said they were going to expand the 8 man playoffs to 32 teams this year if they got enough teams to participate. They got enough. They went back on their word. The system to make the playoffs right now in 8 man is ridiculous. That brings up Cedarville. Might not make it if they lose. That would be awful. Cedarville is definitely one of the better 8 man teams in the State this year. Top 10 worthy IMO.
Forest Park 54 Cedarville 38

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21st

Kingsford (6-2) at Escanaba (6-2) - Great Northern Conference
This game is for 2nd in the GNC. In reality these are the next two best teams in the UP to Menominee. The UPSSA is just wrong. Escanaba has had a real nice season. That season had a hiccup last week. They were nipped on a road trip by Merrill when the Blue Jays scored and went for the win with a 2 point conversion pass near the end of the game to win it. The Eskymos defense scored another TD in that game. They have quite a few of those this season. Kingsford stomped a much improved Gladstone team last week. They lit the Braves up through the air. Escanaba looks a lot like the teams they have had the last 2 years. Those teams beat Kingsford. They did it by owning the line of scrimmage and playing good defense. This Escanaba team is very similar to those. If the Flivvers can stop Escanaba's power running game... here it comes try and stop it. Power off tackle behind two bruiser fullbacks. They will pull this out. If they don't Escanaba will win. This war will be won and lost on the line and of course execution. Escanaba has won these types of games 2 years in a row. I have to respect that.
Escanaba 21 Kingsford 13

Calumet (7-1) at Gladstone (3-5) - Non Conference
Calumet struggled to start the season. They lost to a good Negaunee team. Won ugly against Northland Pines and survived a mistake ridden game by both teams to overcome Hurley in OT. Then they started playing WestPAC teams and it was easy for them. The Copper Kings were expected to be good this season, but we really don't know how good they are. I just don't think the WestPAC tells us that. Gladstone was beaten soundly last week, but I still came away feeling good about them. They are definitely a much improved team this season. I think they play good run defense and their QB is a heckuva athlete. This game will come down to mistakes. Gladstone is really dangerous, but they are their own worst enemy at times. If they can take care of the ball, they will win this game. I see a couple costly turnovers dooming them, but we will find out of Calumet can pass in this one. I see the Braves and their speed giving the Copper King running attack problems.
Calumet 22 Gladstone 18

Marquette (1-7) at Menominee (7-1) - Great Northern Conference
The Maroons long regular season winning streak was stopped by a good DeWitt team. That seems to be a brutal place to play. Especially when you travel 7 hours to get there. To make matters worse the UPSSA decided that loss justified putting Negaunee at number one. Yeah ok. I would be thrilled to see the Maroons end up in D6 this year. Negaunee would be taking a little trip to Blesch (yes the Maroons will still end up with more playoff points). The last two times that has happened the Maroons mercy ruled the Miners by halftime. Marquette has had a brutal year. They have a participation problem. That required them to bring up an excessive amount of JV players. Most of them not ready for varsity yet. The result has been some very lopsided losses this season. They should return a lot of starters next season so hopefully it pays off for them. This year, they take their lumps. Here is the final and largest lump. Marquette will score some points, but not on the starters.
Menominee 56 Marquette 14

Sault Ste Marie (2-6) at Kingsley (2-6) - Non Conference
Great pickup game for these two football teams to get that last game in before the 2016 season comes to a close for each of them. Sault Ste Marie has one year under their belt in the Great Northern Conference. It was a rough one. Didn't win a game. The Blue Devils had some potential but they never really got to it. Kingsley has had a tough year of their own. The Stags were in a lot of close games, but did not manage to win many of them. The difference here? Sault Ste Marie plays much better competition than Kingsley. That will help get them a very hard fought win here.
Sault Ste Marie 19 Kingsley 13

Iron Mountain (6-2) at Norway (7-1) - Mid Peninsula Conference
Both teams have clinched a playoff birth. I think both of them also have a home playoff game coming in the 1st round. This game is basically for 2nd place in the MPC. Norway has had a real nice season. Not sure anyone had them 7-1 at this point. The Knights seem to have one of their better teams in years. Iron Mountain has been solid, but most of us knew they would be very good this season. This rivalry game has been extremely lopsided over the years. Plain and simple, the Mountaineers have absolutely owned the Knights. Even when the Knights have good teams, they can't seem to beat the Mountaineers. Iron Mountain has won 14 straight in this series and like 25 out of the last 27. That is a huge monkey attached to the back of the Knights jerseys. How can I pick against Iron Mountain.
Iron Mountain 20 Norway 14

West Iron County (5-3) at L'Anse (2-6) - WestPAC Conference
Just win baby. The Wykons have battled back this season to take full control of their playoff destiny in their last game. Win and you're in. After a poor start to the season, West Iron County has won 4 of their last 5 to earn a shot at the playoffs here. L'Anse has been playing much better themselves down the stretch winning 2 or their last 3 games. They also played conference champion Calumet tougher then the Wykons did in between those wins. The WestPAC is ridiculously hard to predict. You just never know who is going to fall flat on their face from week to week. I have to believe West Iron County comes to play in this one with the playoffs on the line.
West Iron County 24 L'Anse 18

Hancock (4-4) at Houghton (3-5) - WestPAC Conference
Houghton was 3-0 to start the season. Hancock was 4-2 and looking playoff bound just two weeks ago. They are a combined 0-7 since. Not a great way to enter the Copper Bowl. Hancock's playoff chances? Slim and none. The co-op's make Hancock a Class B school. You will not make the playoffs as a Class B at large team by playing in the WestPAC. Too many small schools. This will be a tough game to predict. The Copper Bowl usually is, but these two football teams have been a model of inconsistency at times, so that makes it double trouble trying to figure out who should win. You know what? I'm just taking Hancock. No reason.
Hancock 27 Houghton 22

Bark River-Harris (3-5) at North Dickinson (5-3) - Mid Eastern Conference
North Dickinson looks like they are back in the playoffs. Do they need to get to 6 wins to automatically qualify? Yes. Will they still get in with 5 wins? Yes. Class D has hardly anyone left playing 11 man football. All you have to do is get to 5 wins and you're pretty much in now. Bark River will not make the playoffs. Schedule was absolutely brutal this season. This is a good team that will not make it. I was really pulling for them to do it, but it just isn't going to happen. This should be a great game and I think Bark River is just as talented as North Dickinson. The Nordics have more confidence than the Broncos at this point and that is huge in this game.
North Dickinson 22 Bark River-Harris 20

Newberry (7-1) at St Ignace (7-1) - Non Conference
What a year for both of these teams. Newberry shows only one close loss to Lake Linden this season. St Ignace only shows a loss to defending champion Muskegon Catholic Central on the road. Both teams have impressive wins. Newberry was challenged with a tough conference. St Ignace was challenged with a tough out of conference schedule. St Ignace is as battle tested as they have ever been. Big win over Ishpeming last week. That proves they can absolutely handle a running team. Now they get to see how they do against the pass. I think they pass that too.
St Ignace 30 Newberry 20

Gaylord St Mary (6-2) at East Jordan (4-4) - NMFL Legacy Conference
Anyone remember when East Jordan was 4-1? The wheels are off the bus. The last two losses are a head scratcher. Have to assume the Red Devils are beat up with injuries. Nothing else explains the sudden collapse. Still, if they win this game they would make the playoffs as a Class D at large team. Problem is they are Class C. Playoffs waived bye bye. Gaylord St Mary is in the playoffs. They have had a fabulous year, even though they laid their first egg of the season in a loss to Harbor Springs last week. I like the Snowbirds here. Something seems wrong with the Red Devils.
Gaylord St Mary 38 East Jordan 24

Joburg (4-4) at Harbor Springs (4-4) - NMFL Legacy Conference
Can someone explain to me where these two teams were the first half of the season? There were a combined 3-8. Since then 5-1. Both improved. One of them more than the other though. Harbor Springs is going to close the season winning 5 of 6 and miss the playoffs anyway. Next year show up earlier Rams.
Harbor Springs 42 Joburg 28

Mancelona (2-6) at Central Lake (2-6) - Non Conference
Two teams having tough seasons. They do have one thing in common. Both beat Mesick. Mancelona beat them by more. Good enough for me.
Mancelona 26 Central Lake 24

Inland Lakes (0-8) at Hillman (4-4) - Non Conference
Inland Lakes in winless. Last time that happened? 2001. It happened to them 2 years in a row there. Hillman needs one win to make the playoffs. As a Class D school, they will get an at large bid if they can get to 5 wins. They will.
Hillman 42 Inland Lakes 6

Carney-Nadeau (1-6) at Ontonagon (3-5) - Western Eight Conference
The season started out like a bang for both these teams. Carney shocked us by stunning Ewen-Trout Creek in the first game of the season. Nothing has gone right since. Ontonagon looked like one of the better teams in the Western Eight early this season. Then the injury bug bit them. Not the same team. Give me Ontonagon in this one.
Ontonagon 62 Carney-Nadeau 18

Rapid River (5-3) at Ewen-Trout Creek (1-7) - Great Western Conference
Rapid River is clinging to playoff life. They have a chance but they are going to need help. Ewen-Trout Creek has had a rough season. That first loss to Carney-Nadeau kind of set the tone. Rapid River wins and starts scoreboard watching.
Rapid River 48 Ewen-Trout Creek 14

North Central (8-0) at Stephenson (7-1) - Western Eight Conference
North Central has been on easy street for quite a while since the beginning of the season. From here on out.... all tough teams remain on the schedule. Playoffs will be completely loaded with 16 quality playoff teams. If the Jets are going to repeat, they are really going to earn it. Stephenson has been fantastic this season. They seem to be getting better and better as the season goes along. This is their ultimate test. I like the defending champs here. Simply put, they are better balanced.
North Central 62 Stephenson 28

Superior Central (3-5) at Baraga (1-7) - Western Eight Conference
Superior Central is 3-5 this season. Not too shabby. Baraga having a tough year. Although there was that one game they put it together against Carney-Nadeau. This could be a good game. I like the Cougars to get to 4 wins this season.
Superior Central 38 Baraga 28

Pellston (0-8) at Charlton Heston (1-7) - Bridge Alliance Conference
Oh brother. Both teams have been looking forward to this game. The two cellar dwellars of the BAC go at it here. Everybody destroys Pellston. Even Charlton Heston.
Charlton Heston 54 Pellston 12

Posen (4-4) at Engadine (8-0) - Bridge Alliance Conference
What a year for Engadine. This week they look to wrap up the BAC title with a win over last years BAC winner. Spectacular season for the Eagles. Where they end up in the playoffs is a bit unknown as of now. Either way the 8 man playoffs will be brutal up here. Nothing but great teams. Some good teams will even be missing. Engadine takes care of business.
Engadine 56 Posen 20

Rudyard (5-3) at Pickford (7-1) - Bridge Alliance Conference
Good game here to end the regular season. Both of these teams have been good this year. Rudyard has to feel pretty good about their first year in this league. The Bulldogs struggled in 11 man just to field a team at times. To finish with a winning record having played some really good teams? Great year! Pickford has been getting better and better. What they did to Cedarville last week? Best 8 man win in the programs history. Expect them to win here. The Panthers are on a roll and at home.
Pickford 50 Rudyard 20

Onaway (4-4) at Bellaire (3-5) - Bridge Alliance Conference
The winner here gets 4th place in the BAC. That would be quite remarkable for Bellaire. They basically have a JV team playing this year. Onway has been pretty solid. If 8 man had not gotten so much better this year they might have had some more wins. I like Onaway here.
Onaway 44 Bellaire 16

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22nd

Mendon (6-2) at Manistique (0-8) - Non Conference
The Emeralds. 3-32 in the last 4 years. Mendon. Regular playoff team with multiple State Championships. Any questions?
Mendon 38 Manistique 12

Ironwood (0-8) at Gogebic (1-7) - Non Conference
A little Gogebic rivalry to end the season. Both teams have had rough seasons. Ironwood seems to have those every year. Gogebic has been pretty decent since they formed. Gogebic seems to be regressing a bit this season. The last time they looked decent was against Lake Linden-Hubbell back in week 4. Ironwood was respectable in week 5 and 6. I know, its pretty sad when I have to look back at both teams just to find games they were not blown out in. I'm taking Ironwood in a mild upset.
Ironwood 28 Gogebic 20

Munising (2-6) at Lake Linden-Hubbell (8-0) - Mid Eastern Conference
How about those Lakes? Sure looks like they will finish the year unbeaten despite the tough schedule. The Lakes have a nice program. Munising has taken a step back this year after a couple really nice years that program had. I like the Lakes here obviously. The question I have for them.... Can they make a playoff run? That has been their Achilles heal. It's not because they lay an egg, although there was that one time. It's because D8 up here.... brutal.

You need to factor in who EJ and Harbor played early and late, for instance. EJ played a weak early schedule to get 4 wins, then finally played some competition, whereas Harbor played some halfway decent teams early, while finishing with cupcakes. Harbor is a C school playing in a D league. With the exception of St. Ignace, a very weak league. Even though GSM was 6-1 when they played Harbor, they hadn't beaten anybody very good. That explains the "turnaround".

Cedarville lost their best player to a knee injury mid 4th quarter of the Engadine game and haven't been the same since.

I'm sure Coach Olson blew this season on purpose. Sometimes it doesn't work out, four starters hurt at a small school is like losing eight starters if they go both ways.

Cedarville not only lost arguably its best all around player but also had another starter out last nite and lost a starter right at the beginning of the game. Its tough in 8 man when you lose three starters. We were playing freshman and sophomores. Forest Park is an excellent team all around but if you took 3 starters away (one of them your best player) it makes things different. Hopefully if Cedarville makes the playoffs 2 of the starters will be back. The one who blew out his knee won't even get to play basketball this year. prob the worst knee injury I have ever seen.
